Hurricane Irene

Just thought we would share with you some pictures of our recent visitor - Irene!

All in all, it was a pretty scary experience, with the build up on Saturday bringing lots of heavy rain and winds. The TV coverage of the storm hitting the South Eastern states warned us northerners what we needed to do - and buy - to prepare. Needless to say that the shops quickly sold out of all those things! After a noisy, stormy Saturday night, our entire town lost power (and most of us water too!!) at 7am on Sunday morning. All we could do was watch the storm grow in intensity and hope that it would be short lived and not cause any major damage to our house, which fortunately it didn't. The photos don't really do it justice, but it was a devastating storm for our state, with 700,000 households without power in Connecticut. Five days on, over 200,000 homes in CT still do not have power, including 75% of our town, Madison. We were very fortunate that our power was restored in just under 2 days - that time without power, and particularly water, with two small kids, was tough enough!

Naturally enough our lovely ocean front got ravaged the most, with roads torn up and many properties suffering tremendous flood and wind damage. All three of our town beaches are currently closed until further notice.

We just hope that this really was a once in a hundred year storm! Although it was predicted to be worse, it was certainly bad enough and our community will take many weeks and months to recover from Irene's visit.

Special apologies to our friend Kevin, who arrived for a quick visit to us on Saturday afternoon, so experienced not only a hurricane, but also what it's like to be housebound with no power with a lively two and a half year old!!!
